Nip lash

Suddenly my 6 month old jerks his head at ANY sound while eating to see what's going on. It kinda drives me crazy... He's also been doing this thing with his hands where he holds my boob really close to the nipple and pushes back while still latched, and that hurts too. Sitting in a quiet place helps with the head jerking, but not the nipple pulling. Any suggestions? When do they outgrow the need to see EVERYTHING while nursing?
