So undecided. VBAC or C-Section
I had my beautiful son Stanley 8 months ago. Had a fantastic quick and easy first stage of labour - 8 hours of natural labour and got to 10cm then it all went wrong. Babies head wouldn’t descend and was posterior. For 6 hours I tried everything the doctors suggested to try and get his head t turn and come down - different positions, had my waters broke, and even an epidural (not for pain but because they said it may help alter my contractions and move his head). Anyway, 22 hours later they decided an emergency C-Section was necessary. I suffered PTSD after.
I’m 18 weeks pregnant now and wanted to try for a VBAC birth. However I live in a regional area and was told at first that my hospital wouldn’t allow VBACs if under 18 months between births. So I thought I’d have to have another c-section. Then my Obs said I could do VBAC if I travelled to a major hospital, but logistically that’d be hard. I only have my Husband in this country - no family or close friends who could babysit my 8mo old. Also husband wouldn’t be able t stay over at the hospital and we can’t afford a hotel.
THEN last week an obstetrician said she could support me to have a VBAC at my local hospital, but it is risky as that hospital doesn’t have an ICU or 24 hour theatre or anaesthetic team. The nearest major hospital would be an hour drive away if anything went wrong.
Am I stupid to consider taking this risk to try and get a natural birth? I’m undecided. The safer thing would be an elective C-Section, but I really wanted to try a VBAC, also a 1/200 risk of rupture still means I’m more likely not to rupture than to rupture.
Anyone had any advice for VBACs under 18 months or know people who’ve been successful? Or know statistics and research on the risks and benefits of VBAC? I’m so undecided and confused right now.
