Playpen for newborn

So we have a playpen that was given to us by a friend, unfortunately it doesn’t have the bassinet feature so it’s just a regular playpen. Would it be okay to let a newborn nap in it or even just lay in it for short periods of time. I’m wanting to put a playpen on our main floor so while I am cooking or whatever I can lay her in it so I won’t have to leave her upstairs in a whole different room.
