Question

I'm 15 and I am close to my mom but I wanted some other opinions and tips about Birth control for regulating my period. But I'm not sure what brand and what's the best out there? And how to approach my mom about this even tho I'm close with her? Any tips.....

I got my first period ever at age 9, I was formally diagnosed with PCOS at 13 and put on the pill to help treat that. To be honest, I'm a tad envious that you can say you're close with your mom, mine refused to speak to me about it unless it was to say how wrong I was. So most of my research comes from peer reviewed medical journals, articles and papers.

I started out with Ortho tri cyclene, and I loved it, it managed my acne, helped me keep and balance my weight. And my periods were easier to manage.

I got a blood clot from an emergency appendectomy, so I had to stop, I currently have skyla, the smaller IUD designed for teenagers, women who haven't had children and women like me who have an undersized uterus.

All birth control is not 100% effective, and all birth control have negative side effects.

Which leads me to my next point. It is important that once you've started your period to see an OBGYN, sometimes pediatricians aren't as well equipped to handle birth control, but that's usually in a case like mine.

I would start out by asking your mom about your family's reproductive history, to see if there are any conditions you may have inherited. From there have her and you do some research on your own about different birth control methods, I'd recommend Soul Cysters, PCOS Diva and the Mayo Clinic.

From there if you find one you're interested in, bring in your family history plus the method you'd like and talk to either your pediatrician or OBGYN about your risks.
