Should I get Formula?

Hi Ladies
I want to breastfeed when baby is born (37+4) but I’m not sure if my milk will automatically come. Should I get formula from now or wait and see if my milk with naturally come?

Wait and see how you get on. 
The average woman doesn’t have issues with milk coming in, and usually takes an average of 3-4 days as a first time mum, for your milk to come in.
A newborns stomach is TINY and they need such a small amount of colostrum, until your milk comes in 😊

Your mum will most likely come in 3-4 days after giving birth like normal. Your body/hormones just need to recognise that you are no longer pregnant. Offer baby breast as many times as possible. Mine came in after 2 days once I left the hospital. We didn’t even buy formula because I knew if I had it as a back up option I wouldn’t have stuck to it as well as I should of. I breastfed successes for 10 months

Baby’s tummies are tiny!!! They don’t need a lot in the first few days. I wouldn’t buy formula. Your milk will come in 3/4 days after birth but you will be producing colostrum right away. So there’s no need to wait for milk to come in. Colostrum is all babies need. I didn’t keep formula in the house, so I wouldn’t be tempted if it was too hard. It helped me push through and we had a 16 month successful breastfeeding run.

Statistically if you buy formula prior to the birth or bring it to the hospital you’re less likely to breastfeed. Only 3% of women are actually unable to breastfeed - the others don’t have proper support or choose not to.

I’d wait and see. Most of the time it takes a couple days for your milk to come in but you start producing colostrum right away, which is all that baby needs those first few days anyways. It is normal for babies to lose weight for a few days, as long as they gain it back by their week old appointment. However, even if you are one of the ones who can’t produce colostrum immediately (cause we are all different), my hospital sent us home with a bunch of premade formula bottles anyways, just in case. You can always order more if you find you need them.

I’d probably have it on hand in case you need it in a pinch, but your baby will be getting colostrum in the first few days before your milk comes in. Again, it’s great to have a plan and be prepared for that plan, but it’s totally reasonable to get a can of formula in case you ever need it.

I would get some. We had a small can ($17) of the regular similac advance and I glad we did. It would have sucked running to the store at 2am with a hungry baby and exhausted parents.
