Am I understanding correct?

Question

So I’ve been doing some reading up on sperm survival & cervical mucus, please correct me if I’ve understood wrongs  
They say the fertile window is 5 days before you ovulate, but surely if you have no fertile CM then sperm wouldn’t survive the 3-5 days anyway? 
Say for example you started producing fertile CM 3 days before you ovulated, that’s when sperm have the chance to live 3-5 days inside the woman...
So just because it says on an app or online the fertile window is ‘5 days + ovulation’ technically, if you aren’t producing the fertile CM it isn’t your fertile window until you do start? Am I correct?

Log your CM and don’t stress too much about exact timeframes. Everyone is different. You may have a short fertile CM window. The more you log and the more you get to understand your body the more helpful that will be. Use OPKs as well to really get a feel for your ovulation.

I don’t look at it that way
CM has nothing to do with sperms survival, it just aids in getting through the cervix, it’s the conditions in the Fallopian tube that allow them to live so long

This is technically true, however many people do end up pregnant without ever noticing fertile CM. Fertile CM may extend the life of sperm inside you or make it easier for them to reach the egg, but sperm can still reach the egg during and after ovulation without the presence of fertile CM.

That’s the way I understand it. And personally I don’t think any of these apps take my fertile window length in account versus my cycle length. I have a short cycle so it’s unlikely I’d have a 5 days in a fertile window.

Am I understanding correct?
