Can someone explain this to me?

Question

So i am religious about taking my birth control for the past couple of years i take it the same time on the dot, i think the latest i’ve taken it has been 3 minutes. However, the one thing i’m confused about is how during my placebo week how am i still protected. My boyfriend and i usually use condoms but we’ve been dating for a year so we sometimes don’t considering i’m really good with my birth control and he pulls out well every time. But recently we had sex on my last placebo pill and i just need someone to explain to me how i’m still protected...does anyone know?

Fertility proceeds in the order (typically) of thickening of the uterine lining, release of an egg, and then susceptibility to fertilization. 
The hormones in birth control strongly suppress release of the egg and thickening of the uterine lining by mimicking the pregnancy signals after fertilization. During the placebo week the uterine lining is not developed and will not signal the release of an egg (and would not be able to accept it even if one were released). The "period" during the placebo week is not a normal period. 
It takes time for this to return to normal fertility after stopping birth control. Under normal circumstances, ovulation doesn't occur until 14 days after the beginning of the uterine development (i.e., 14 days after the "period"), and it's often much delayed when you've been on birth control.

It’s because the hormones have built up in your system for 3 weeks. It’s not really that complex!
7 days is the max time before the hormones will drop back down to a dangerous level that may risk you ovulating. (Which is why if you miss a pill during the active pills it’s a risk because the hormones are not built up enough)
This is why if you miss the first pill in a pack after your placebo week, it is more crucial than any other time. Because you now have had no pill for 8 days and your hormones will start to drop and you must use a back up for 7 days.

The placebos are literally nothing at all. That week youre fine regardless. Or start a new pack of birth control in place of that week. Its so you can stay in the habit of taking them
