Student washing clothes problems

I’m a student and whenever me or my roommates do the washing we notice that A) the clothes don’t smell that good, as the smell of washing products is very faint. B) the “faint smell” only lasts two wears then the clothes smell of shea butter or something similar to that after. We use a powder(and a liquid comforter(lenor). But what else can we use to make the clothes smell better for longer and make the scent stronger?
