Dr. prescribed too much folic acid?

L

I’m super stressed out right now. My pharmacist caught that after TWO MONTHS of taking my prenatal that I was on the super high folic acid one (5mg or 5000mcg, recommendation during pregnancy is 800-1000mcg daily) when I have no medical need (that i know of) to be on it.

I’m super stressed out after reading a few peer reviewed medical studies about negative effects of too much folic acid, and the study was still a fraction of what I was taking. I’m waiting to hear back from my doctor on why he prescribed it but I spoke to my midwife who confirmed that’s too much folic acid for me and she had no idea why I’d be prescribed that much.

Luckily during the first 1.5 months of being on it I was really bad at remembering to take my night time dose (which is the one with all the folic acid) so maybe I only took it 3-4 times a week, but between 14-16 weeks I was perfect at remembering every single night. The past 5 days I’ve been on a 1mg dose until my doctor can verify.

Is anyone else taking 5mg daily of folic acid or has in a previous pregnancy with everything being just fine?

I have no family or personal history of neural tube defects and this is my second baby, first had no issues whatsoever.
