To find out the sex, when the legs are just showing and they have the arrow in the middle to say what it is, do they put the ultrasound wand thing on the side of the belly?

I do ultrasound and there is a method to the madness.  An ultrasound probe has a specific direction and there are different planes to divide the body depending on how you turn it.  When it comes to looking for gender, it is all about where baby is sitting.  Turning the probe just helps to obtain the correct angle for seeing those key parts clearly.  So to answer your original question, no, it doesn't always have to be moved to the side.  If baby is straight up and down, you may have to move to the top or bottom of the belly.  If baby is in a transverse or laying longways across the belly, you will likely have to move to the side.  It's all up to baby.

By this question do you literally mean on the side? Cuz it just depends on where your baby is positioned at the time and how far along you are. Every baby is different therefor every ultra sound wand will be in a different spot to find the baby's business 😊

Actually no, what they do is turn the wand and it somehow picks up a different angle of the baby. I wondered the same thing.
