I work for a clothing store. Of course it’s a corporation. Apparently there was a story in the news last night that a customer was racially profiled at another store. So this morning an email was sent by a customer claiming we ignored her to help a white customer. Now when this customer came in was a week ago. The email was essentially sent a week later. Since she gave the time stamp on the receipt, that’s how we know it was a week ago. In her email she kept saying an older lady was ignoring her. Apparently that older lady was me. My manager looked at the video. It was a shipment day and I was there more for shipment. Apparently I took off to the fitting rooms when she was going towards the registers, but when my manager saw the video she was nowhere near the registers when I went towards the fitting rooms. Then she claimed no one was at the registers when she went to check out and that when I came to the register, I went to help a white customer. According to the video, she waited for no more than a few seconds. A coworker and myself both came out. Another customer came up to ask a question. I answered the other customer’s question while my coworker rang up the one that is complaining. Basically my manager said the video did not match what she said and that I didn’t do anything wrong. It still has me upset though. Especially because right now I’m trying to get promoted to manager and I’m afraid how something like this will look. Honestly, customers always come up and ask questions when we’re in the middle of ringing up other customers. If it’s something I can answer quickly, I answer and apologies to the customer I’m ringing out for the interruption. If it’s something more detail, I ask them to give me a moment and if possible call another associate or manager to help them. I try to treat everyone equally and the fact that this happens just makes me feel like I have to be even more cautious. I know the video cleared me, but it’s just hard to let go. And I don’t have anyone to really talk to which is why I came here. Work has always been my safe place because my home life is so stressful. I guess all I can do is try to get past it
