Do you ever let your baby “cry it out”?

Not for long, but anyone? if so when? I’m starting to think I should have let him before considering to now at 9 months.. 😢

Yes. Sometimes my daughter is whining and crying cause she’s tired but fighting sleep. So I’ll let her cry for a few minutes then lay her down and she’ll fall right to sleep. It’s not about me not nurturing her or letting her feel unsafe 🙄 she’ll literally fight me if I rock her so letting her cry for a few minutes is ok. Or if she’s crying because I’m going into the kitchen to get me something to eat since I’m literally starving and she wants to be on my hip, then I’ll let her cause I’m not gonna not eat or strain myself holding her while fixing something.

Yes, as my doctor always says “a baby never died from crying it out, but they have been injured when the exhausted parent accidentally falls asleep when they should be watching the baby.”

I never did with mine. But when my daughter was a baby she would make herself sick from crying, even just riding in the car. They say if your baby ever throws up from crying, then CIO is not a good idea.

No, a child should feel safe and lived so if it's in distress I will comfort them. They are too young to take advantage of it. It's their basic sense of safety that is still developing and that will influence them for the rest of their lives.

If my children evee woke up at night fussy I'd let them fuss but if they were crying hard then i could tell they needed something. But by the time they were both going all night without needing to eat then I would let them cry. It only took a few hard nights before they were sleeping all night. My pediatrician reccomended I open their door and tell them it's ok every so often to reassure them but i found if i did that they'd carry on for ever. If i just left them to cry within 10 minutes they'd stop. They are both very easy to put to bed 9 times out of 10 even my 3 year old most days goes to bed without so much as a complaint I think its a great approach so long as your baby truly doesn't need anything through the night anymore as far as food or a diaper change

Did cry it out and within a week was sleep trained. If all of their needs are met, they are not going to die from crying for a short period.

Yep! We did controlled crying when we sleep trained at 8 months, where you let them cry for a  few minutes and then go in an soothe them. It worked well for us at that age and she was falling asleep quickly and staying asleep within a week or so.
Then our daughter got RSV at 13 months old and had to be hospitalized for a week. When she came home we were still so scared for her and created some really terrible sleeping habits out of fear for her health, including sleeping on her floor. When we were finally convinced she was fully healed at 14 months we did full on CIO. We tried controlled crying again but she’d caught on to the trick and would just wait for us to come back in to “soothe” and never go to sleep. By that age she’d outsmarted us and CIO was the only thing that worked. It took maybe 3-4 nights of crying (the time reduced each night) and she’s slept well ever since, except when teething or sick, which obviously we make exceptions for.

I never did with mine.  When my daughter was colicky, I’d sometimes put her in a safe spot (bassinet or pack and play) and step outside, cry for a few minutes, and then come back and deal with her.  
They’re well adjusted teenagers now.  It certainly didn’t make them overly dependent on me to answer their calls when they were infants.  It only made them feel safe and less anxious.

I did a version of CIO with my oldest around 7 months. He refused to sleep at night. He wouldn’t end up falling asleep until 11-12 because he would fight so hard. His pediatrician told me to put him in his crib at 7 when he was sleepy. After 10 minutes of crying I was to go in and comfort him without picking him up. Then repeat until he was asleep. It took about an hour the first night and after about 4 nights he was going to sleep with a smile on his face. We were all less stressed and much more rested. Many women on here say its mean and borderline abuse but I had a much happier baby and was a much better mama because of it!

I’ll let my daughter whine cry but if she’s really crying, then no. She does this sometimes in the middle of the night and I’ll let her go maybe 3 minutes and listen to the type of cry and then I know if she’s just whining looking for her pacifier or if she’s crying and I need to go in.
