Nutramigen and Mucous in stool

Hi all!

My 10 week old has been on Nutramigen since she was 6 weeks old due to suspected CMPA, she was on gentlease and that made her extremely fussy, colicky, had painful gasses and couldn’t eat more than 1oz at a time. The day she started Nutramigen she was a new baby, the screaming and crying stopped. She started sleeping through the night just waking 1 time to eat, Nutramigen was a life saver! After 2 weeks on the new formula she started having blood and mucousy diapers (she never had them before) and only had blood in them 2 days and also started spitting up a lot more than before, she still is a happy baby and good sleeper. I know that having mucous and blood in stool is a reaction to the ingredients in formula so why isn’t bothering her, and why isn’t she crying in pain? Should I leave her on it or try Elemental formula? Is having mucous in diapers normal? Has anyone run into a similar situation?

Call her pediatrician. My son had a similar experience, and Nutramigen was still not basic enough for him. He ended up going on Elecare, an amino acid based formula, until 4 months when he outgrew the allergy. When my son still had mucous in his poop with Nutramigen, his pediatrician recommended monitoring it for that to be consistent before switching. As soon as we switched, his poops looked way more normal, & he was way happier. I’m sorry you all are going though this—I know how stressful it all is.

Update on Elecare. Her spit up has decreased tremendously !!! Also she hasnt has any mucousy diapers Im so relieved for that but I’ve noticed she’s been super gassy and uncomfortable and fussy, it’s been 3 days on Elecare. Does it get better? Did your baby go through this as well?

I don’t remember it being thin at all, but memory is short. I remember Nutramigen being super thin & my son would spit up a lot on it, but we didn’t have issues with Elecare. I do know someone who did Alimentum for similar reasons and her daughter had reflux too. She fed her baby with rice cereal in the bottle under drs orders too, so I know that some kids do just require that, even though it’s not ideal.

I forgot to add my baby has horrible reflux and she’s on meds. Elecare seems to be a super thin formula as well, did you have to thicken it or just gave it straight as it is? And did baby spit out a bit?
