Should their be a citizenship question on the census?
The president has already given up on fighting this issue, but the question still remains. Should a question asking if a person is a citizen of the United States be allowed on the census?
I can see how illegal immigrants would be fearful of being honest, as they would be afraid of being deported.
However, the census is a very important process in the United States. It determines how many representatives a state gets, the amount of federal funding, the number of electoral college votes, etc.
I think it’s important to know two things:
1. How many people reside in the US
2. How many US citizens reside in the US
If we continue to count illegal immigrants, then states are at risk of getting more federal funding than they should be allotted, and having more representatives than they should be allotted. Why should we count people who can’t vote? Why should we continue to utilize tax funds to support people who don’t pay taxes?
I know this will be controversial (hence the forum I posted it in). Let’s make one thing clear: I am all for immigration. I am just in favor of it being done legally. The system is definitely broken though, and that needs to be changed. I am very aware of how broken it is and how hard it is to become a citizen. No, I do not think that is fair.
However, the census serves many purposes, several of which are negatively impacted and falsely represented due to illegal immigrants.
What are your thoughts? Just as I am entitled to my opinion, you are entitled to yours. So let’s have a civil debate and discuss it. 😊
