Symptoms of nuchal cord?

So I’m watching the Handmaid’s Tail and this girl gave birth to her baby sleeping because the cord was wrapped around her neck. This got me thinking... would there be any signs that my baby’s cord is wrapped around his neck? Would an ultrasound be able to show this? FTM here and everything terrifies me 😭

What really pissed me off about that episode is that no one tries to resuscitate the baby. It came out not moving and they just covered it's face! I was flipping out.

A lot of babies have the cord wrapped around the neck at birth, it’s actually quite common. It’s so long it’s not usually tight and the doctor just slips it off as baby comes out. Baby’s heart rate is monitored during labour so in the odd case where it tightens as baby descends it will be hear on the monitor and intervention will take place if need be. 
That episode bothered me. They didn’t try to revive the baby, which is usually easily done in those situations. And the labour stopped and then nothing was done until it started again, so that’s likely when the baby actually died. Both situations there are interventions for in real life. That’s why things aren’t just “left up to god” anymore.

At the antenatal testing center at our hospital they can kinda see where the cord is on the ultrasound. They can trace the blood flow so it gives an indication of where it is.
I'm terrified of this too, not to scare you, but because we lost our first at 20 wks because of a short cord that was wrapped twice around the neck and once on the arm.
I know logically many babies are born with cords around the neck just fine. The doctors keep telling me, once wrapped is no big deal, especially if it's not short. They told me to just pay attention to movement patterns, and come in if it changes. They say when you get multiple wraps and maybe a limb is when it can pull tight.
At 20 weeks even if we could have detected it, she wouldn't have survived outside. But now I'm 37 wks, and I'm trying to be vigilant and get them to check at my NST appointments. It is scary and you have a right to ask. Just try to be aware if it's your worry or actual intuition that something might be off, or you'll drive yourself crazy.

My ob said half of the babies he delivers have the cord around their neck he just unwraps it and delivers

Girl your baby will be monitored while you’re giving birth. If the cord is wrapped they will know and do a c section
And yes you can see it on an ultrasound

Nuchal cords are almost never an emergency. Many babies are born with the cord around the neck with no problem, thanks to Wharton’s jelly 😊
The babies who DO end up having a cord injury due to a nuchal cord almost always have something else going on causing the problem (2 artery cord instead of 3, shorter cord, prolapsed cord, etc). All of those issues would have been found in your anatomy scan or during the birth itself.

My baby has flipped directions/positions like at least 7 times that I know of, so at my last ultrasound I expressed fear that she would be wrapped in her cord a bunch of times. They used a special filter on the ultrasound machine that lit up the blood in her cord blue and red. They aimed it at her neck and couldn’t see any red and blue so she felt confident the cord wasn’t wrapped. It made me feel a lot better! Maybe at your next appointment just ask. They can check to alleviate your fears.

Had elective 3d ultrasound done at 28 weeks and the cord was hanging out around his neck...

Just had a growth scan at 34 weeks and you can still see it chilling there between his cheek and chin. Any changes in movement patterns and you bet your butt I'll be to the hospital.

Yeah my son has a cord around his neck. At least he did for his 24 and 26week ultrasound. Freaks me out, especially since he stopped kicking and rolls now.

Ugh it was so hard for me to watch that episode! I have been so on edge ever since that episode especially when I feel less movement. Good question!!
