3cm dilated. Am i in labor?

Question

So at my doctors appointment today my OB checked my cervix and said i was 3cm dilated. When i ask him questions he just gives me a direct answer and doesn’t really explain so when i asked him what does it mean He said that’s a good thing, but I’m 36 weeks and 4 days. Does this mean I’m in labor or I’ve been having contractions or i will go into labor soon and if so how soon? Will i fully dilate before i go into labor. He didn’t really make it clear when i asked.

You can walk around dilated for weeks. You could go into labor soon, or it could take a couple weeks, but just be out on the look out for signs of labor (contractions, bleeding, water breaking). But being dilated doesn’t mean labor, I’m sorry your doctor didn’t explain much to you!

Your not in labor until you are having regular contractions and are at 4cm and up. That’s when it’s considered active labor at least. Lots of women sit at 1- even 6cm for weeks so really it doesn’t mean anything. If you lose a big round of mucus plug and get a bloody show with regular contractions/ water breaks then you will be in labor. I know your excited won’t be too much longer for you!

Being dilated doesn't mean you're in labor.  Only your water breaking and/or regular,  consistent timeable contractions indicate labor.  Best of luck, it's almost time!

I’ve been dilated to a 3 and 95% effaced since 31 weeks and I’m currently 35 weeks but I’m also on pills to stop contractions so.🤷🏼‍♀️

Being dilated doesn't mean anything about when you will go into labor. You can be dilated for months before labor begins unfortunately.
