Can someone explain pumping to me???

Like when should I pump? For how long? How many times a day. I am only 5 days post partum so my milk came in 2 days ago. I pumped a little from each breast just to figure out how to use my breast pump properly. If I pump and then need to feed shortly after will there be enough milk?? FTM no idea how this works??? Any help is appreciated.

I like to pump right away in the morning before she eats. That’s when I seem to get the most. Then I went back to work now so I pump every 2.5 hours that I’m gone. I also pump for about 20minutes each session. Sometimes longer depending on how my breasts feel but usually 20 minutes is enough. Also no you’re not going to “run out” of milk. You can pump first and then if your baby wants to nurse shortly afterwards she/he will get the milk they need. Babies are more efficient at getting the milk than pumps are. Remember that when you start pumping and you’re only getting 1-2oz. Pumping isn’t a gauge for how much milk you’re making as long as your baby is growing well and you have enough wet/poop diapers. But I heard in the beginning you should wait until your milk supply is established, like 4-6weeks before you start pumping. I waited about 10weeks because I didn’t really need to pump right away. Now I have a decent stash. Oh also try investing in a haaka, it will help collect the let down that would otherwise be wasted. That way you’re building a supply without having to try. I started when I was in hospital due to my baby not being able to latch properly so I would try to latch then bottle feed the bottle I pumped previously eventually he latched with help of nipple shields
I kept up the pumping after every feed helped upping the supply as he was going through the cluster feedings then got to about 8 weeks and started to drop a pump each time til just in the morning two feeds get enough for about 400 ml which I freeze and use whenever I need a break or have a drink or two also have extra sleep my husband can feed him instead

If you’re not having any issues with supply then no need to pump. If you need to build up a supply for when you go back to work or whatever, it’s advised to wait a few weeks to start pumping.
