Do she need to adopt our son

After reading posts about adoption im wondering does that apply to us
Me and my wife are legally married and was married before we had our son and she is on his birth certificate do she still need to adopt him if we were legally married before I became pregnant

My wife and I talked to a lawyer ( we live in California) who told us it’s best to have her adopt our child because although we are protected in California due to the laws in place, it might not be the case if we travel outside of California even if she is on the birth certificate. Therefore, she will be adopting our child just to cover all bases.

If she’s on the birth certificate then no, unless she wants to take extra extra precaution. But the name on the birth certificate is enough.
