Tips on potty training?

My oldest son is 2 and showing signs of being ready for potty training but I have no idea where to start. I got him a little potty. This is my first time potty training and I’m completely lost. Any tips or advice?

I used the book “potty training in 3 days” with both of my boys, and was successful. Basically, you dedicate 3 days initially to get them going.
I’d start by getting a potty topper (personally I prefer them to sit on the big toilet with a topper so I don’t have to clean a little potty). Show him what it is and what it’s for. While you’re changing his diaper for the next week or two, talk about how he is going to stop using diapers soon and will be using a big boy potty. When the time comes, have him help you “throw his diapers away” (you can save them). When the day comes to start potty training, put him in cotton underwear with no pants, and expect lots of accidents. Let him know that he has to let you guys know when he needs to use the potty. Just stay with him throughout these days so that you can catch him mid-accident and bring him to the potty (and remind him that he has to let you know when he has to go). Getting wet with the underwear will show him what happens if he doesn’t use the potty (pull-ups are basically upgraded diapers IMO). You can use little treats to reward him for peeing and pooping (1 little treat for pee, 2 for poop). A sticker chart also was helpful with my second boy. 
I’d only use pull ups at night and during naps and refer to them as his “sleeping underwear”. 
Anyways, I recommend the book mentioned above. It was a lifesaver for me. Good luck!!!

Whatever you do make very sure he’s ready. For my 2.5 y/o daughter we knew she was ready because she hated her diapers. She also followed us into the bathroom. She would let herself into the bathroom and mimic peeing which would included pulling down her bottoms and sitting on the toilet. Basically she was begging to be potty trained. I made sure my husband and I were on the same page for how to train and the reward system (stickers). Day 1. Completely naked and sitting on the potty every 30 minutes. (We didn’t get a small toilet because I didn’t want to clean it and I didn’t want a crutch I would later need to separate her from.) Day 2-4. Cotton undies. By now she understood she didn’t want to pee herself because it would be a mess she’d have to clean up. (I would clean again after her.) This is also when she would successfully pee and poo in the potty. Day 5. Outings. We did errands and I would have her sit on public potties. (I bought a Lysol can for this. Lord knows she wouldn’t sit on the paper.) This showed me she was able to hold her pee during car rides and outings. I used stickers because I new she loved them. If she didn’t respond to the stickers, I would have moved onto M&Ms.

So I was convinced my son wouldn’t start until he was closer to 3. He never seemed super interested, diapers didn’t bother him usually and he has a baby brother in diapers. I bought a very basic fisher price potty for $10. I just had it in the living room and we started talking about what it was and how to use it. Then he started asking to sit on it, we kept it very casual. Then I started leaving him naked after diaper changes and he’d sit on it. I just constantly told him, “that’s where pee and poop go...we pee and poop on the potty”. He started not liking having his diaper on and within a week, he starting peeing on the potty. We gave him insane praise and acted incredibly excited about it every time. Then we’ve just slowly tried to add in new things to see how he does (like wearing shorts, underwear, going on small trips out of the house, etc). We’re about a month in now, and he doesn’t wear diapers aside from nap and bedtime. We tell him that we only wear diapers at bedtime but soon we’ll learn how to use the potty at night time too.  I think every kid is different but if you just slowly start introducing it and talking about it, it’ll start happening.

I’m kinda lost too.. my daughter pulls off her diaper all the time and is basically nude if she can be.. she will tell me when she has to go pee and poo.. and will use the potty for pee but poo is a bit hard to catch! She is pretty good at night as well.. it’s me who is effing this all up! She will be 40 before she is potty trained!

Is he curious or mimicking the things you do? If so let him come to the bathroom with you and maybe sit him on his potty at the same time. Also associate a code work like “pee pee” (but your choice) with it.
