Opinions please

I was reading this post about this 13 year old. Her friend was at her house all the time, and her mother never asks the friend to pay for anything when they go out to eat. The friend has a birthday dinner so the 13 year old goes to the dinner with the friend and her parents. At the end of the meal the parents force the 13 year old to pay for her food even though she had no money on her(the 13 year olds mom ended up coming and paying for the girls food).

Anyways I wanted to know everyone's point of view on the topic. Were the parents in the right for splitting the check or should they have covered it since she was their guest?
