Why do babies look fatter at birth and thinner after a few weeks despite putting on weight

I remember how big my baby looked. Now he looks so small like he lost weight. Only he has gained more than a kilo of his both weight and it is not that he is taller, he only grew 1 cm taller.

Babies are usually swollen when they are first born which gives the appearance of them looking bigger and once the swelling goes down they don’t look so big but the swelling usually doesn’t ad very much weight to them
