Our baby girl, Roman Ellis, was born at 26 weeks via emergency c-section. She weighed only 2 lbs when she was born and has been experiencing many obstacles due to her prematurity. Her lungs are underdeveloped and not functioning as they should, causing her to need a breathing tube for about the first 6 weeks of her life, and steroids in hope of seeing improvement. She is also experiencing bleeding in her brain, a common problem with “26 weekers”. Her last head ultrasound showed this blead to be resolving, which we’re hoping means no permanent damage. The first month and a half of her life have been very rough, but as time goes on, her chances look better and better. Roman is currently being treated at the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Maine Med in Portland, and is expected to be there until late September. She is the strongest little girl I’ve ever known 💜
