Is Mucus plug necessary?

Does everyone lose their mucus plug?
Or can someone go into labor on their own without losing a big chunk?

I never lost a big chunk a had a tiny bit of a bloody show but that was a few weeks before going into labor.

Only lost my mucus plug with my first and I had already been induced. My next three I dont remember loosing my mucus plug and I have NEVER had my waters break on their own.
