How to know when you're in labor?

Some of you ladies have said that your water didnt break on it's own, so when did you know that you should go in ?

I got checked out at my 38 week (almost 39) appt this morning with my contractions being consistent and I thought that was supposed to be the sure sign of labor but was told to go home and call if anything happens???

What else am I supposed to look out for? At this point do I just sit at my home having contractions all day? Lol

I'm sorry I'm just so confused

You generally want to wait to go in until your contractions are 5 minutes apart, lasting one minute each for at least an hour, and contractions are so painful you can't talk through them. You're probably just in the earlier stages of labor if they told you to go home. Good luck!!

I woke up with contractions at 4am. Did not go in till I lost my mucus plug. The contractions started becoming painful. First took a shower and packed all my things and then went in at 5pm. Delivered the next day. 16 hour labor.

I wanted to spend as little time in the hospital as I had too... the nurses were surprised I waited so long. Honestly, I think it depends on what your feeling with your body. I’ve heard stories of women having a baby 30 minutes later. I waited for the intensity to increase. It comes in Waves and at the end before I went in I just wanted the pain to stop lol.

They generally don’t want you to go in till your contractions are consistently timeable- 511 - 5 minutes apart lasting for a minute for an hour. With my first I went to the hospital when my contractions were 3 minutes apart and had my daughter 3 hrs later. It is different for everyone- this is just my experience.
