Question about maternity leave. Please help.
This is a sticky situation so if you read through the whole thing and give me advice, I appreciate it.
The agency that I work for recently had to make some changes in the program that I was in, and they were either going to terminate my position or I was told I had to move to a new program. This was all before I found out that I was pregnant. Of course I didn't want to lose my job or my salary, so I accepted working in a new position.
I will be investigating abuse of elderly and individuals with a disability. There will be two caseworkers for the county, including me, in my agency.
I have begun to stress about telling my supervisor about my pregnancy due to the fact that this position is very difficult to cover for, especially since there's only two of us, and I don't think that they've had someone who's pregnant be in this position in the agency.
I also worry, because with this position I'm investigating abuse, so there's the potential for me to get into physically violent situations, I have to go into homes that may have the potential of mold, or gas leaks, etc, and there's really not a way for them to accommodate because I have to be able to investigate the allegations to do my job.
Had I known that I was pregnant before accepting the new position, I likely would have declined and found something else. I am supposed to have a meeting with my supervisor tomorrow and I plan to tell her, even though it's still pretty early, because I know that getting this figured out sooner than later is the best option. I just don't know how to address this, or what I should do.
Any advice that you can give would be beneficial. Thanks in advance.
** This is my first child, and I would want to take 12 weeks off for maternity leave. There is another woman in our agency who is doing the same thing currently, but she works in a different program.
** I am not covered by FMLA because the agency has less than 49 staff.
** I live in Illinois, and we do not have any required paid leave for maternity.
** There are no other programs in the agency for me to transfer to. I either stick with this, or I'll have to find a new job completely, which will be difficult because I'm pregnant.
