Legal question: am I mandated to give six week notice?

So I got a job that said on the job papers I had to give a six week notice before quitting so they can find my replacement. I felt like that was long but I wanted the job so I signed it. I’m ready to quit but I worry that other jobs won’t be okay with being applying six weeks in advance. Do I have to give the six week notice since I signed?

Technically yes you should because it's considered a sign contract, and they could hold it against you. However they most likely won't so if you don't give them a 6 week notice they honestly probably won't do anything. I'm sure you wont be the first.

You need to give 6 weeks notice, you signed a contract.  That said, they may let you leave earlier than that without penalty.  Also, many jobs would have no issue with you starting in 6 weeks if the reason is that you had to give notice at your old job and you are honoring a commitment.  It shows you to be a good employee

If you don’t give proper notice you might not be able to use that job as a positive work experience. Your new job will think highly of you that you chose to leave your old job respectfully.

If you leave sooner and you use that job as a reference they are not going to give you a good reference. It does not reflect well on you at all. And since you signed a paper you are probably legally required to given them notice.

Yes you should, if you don’t and you get another job and put this job as a reference it can make you unhireable (that’s not s word but 😂)
