did i test too early?

I'm supposed to start my period today. (on birth control but missed a few, but took double dose next day to make up for missed). I took a test yesterday but it's negative. haven't tested today. was going to wait a few more days. could I have tested too early? my nipples are really swollen which was one of my first symptoms with my other pregnancies. just wasn't sure the likely chances of a negative 1 day before missed period is accurate
