Flu shot requierment to hold my baby??

Question

Do you think I’m being harsh if I tell my family that if they expect to hold my baby this flu season that they need to get vaccinated?  I want to protect my baby and I feel like they shouldn’t have a problem with it because it’s in his best interest.

Flu shot is notorious for having the most negative and serious side effects. My adult cousin almost died after getting her annual flu shot, otherwise healthy. And it's only 30-60% effective. I got the flu shot a few years ago and was sick non stop that flu season. Never got it again. You can certainly limit people from holding the baby if you want to, vaccinated or not. I personally let immediate family hold the baby, just wash hands, and of course stay away even if they have "allergies". And you could ask them to wear a mask if you're really concerned. But the flu shot specifically....I can understand people's hesitation towards it.

This is what were doing as well since shell be born late November. Flu shots and whooping cough are going to be required. My moms in infectious disease and we all get flu shots yearly anyway. No ones ever had an issue. Better safe than sorry in my opinion. If someone doesn't want to get it or cant for a medical reason such as immunocompromised. Thats their personal call. But as the parent it's my call on who sees my baby.

Every single family member got the DTAP shot before my son was born! No one complained. 🤗

Both sets of grandparents and aunts/uncles all got flu shots and the TDAP vaccine before my son was born. I had him in the middle of January and was so paranoid that someone would get him sick. No one had an issue with that.

I didn't ask anyone to get the flu shot. I did ask people to not come see baby if they had any sign of being sick at all. Woke up with a slightly sore throat? Nope stay home till you know you aren't sick. Had a few sniffles? Wait till you know you aren't sick before coming to see baby. And no one had a problem with that because it just makes sense to not go see a newborn if you are sick.
In my mind if someone got thr flu shot that doesn't mean anything really. They could still get the flu or any number of other colds and such. I got the flu shot while I was pregnant with my daughter and got the flu twice that winter. Twice! Most years I don't get the flu shot and also don't get the flu. So to me the flu shot isn't like the other more important shots where if you get it you can be reasonably certain you'll never get the illness. I would rather people actually think logically about their health and symptoms and then make a logical decision on whether or  not they should be around a newborn instead of just relying on a flu shot to keep them healthy.

I know a lot of people do. My MIL is extremely anti-vaxx though, so unfortunately I knew there was no way they were getting vaxxed. And they live close, so I can't exactly keep them from the baby either. I just made sure to get my shots while pregnant, and then when he was born I made sure everyone washed their hands before holding him, and no one who was even remotely sick was allowed to come around.
