Anyone have the MTHFR gene mutation?

My bloodwork came back and I have the MTHFR A1298C gene mutation. I figured out the basics of what this enzyme is for. I'll be seeing a hematologist soon and wondering what to expect. Did it change your care with a pregnancy or TTC?

Hi Becca,
I had 3 miscarriages in 2018. 2 of the 3 were losses around the 8-week mark although the embryo had stopped growing at 6 weeks 1 day both times. The other pregnancy in between these 2 miscarriages was due to it being a cornual ectopic pregnancy, which means it had attached itself to the corner of the uterus right next to the Fallopian tube and it would have been a high chance my uterus would rupture after 12 weeks. I tested positive for only the a1298c MTHFR mutation after the 3rd miscarriage. I am on a higher methylated folate prenatal vitamin (Wellness Essentials pregnancy) along with 800mg of Ubiquinone (CoQ10), 75mg of DHEA, 5mg of riboflavin, 10,000 IU of D3/K2, and 300mg of magnesium glycinate daily.
Because we haven’t been pregnant all of 2019, I am changing my diet to remove caffeine, sugar, dairy, alcohol, and gluten. I’m also going to increase my workout regiment to 4 days a week as well as meditating every day. It’s been hard as all my friends are getting pregnant around me, but I can’t give up hope until my 43rd birthday next year. I also have had 1 tube and a uterine septum removed. Each pregnancy was natural and not IUI or IVF. Feel free to ask me any questions and good luck!

Hi Becca! I have that mutation too (plus another one for good measure 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️). I’ve done tons of research on it. From what I’ve read, and from the consultation I had with a geneticist, this mutation alone (apparently the C677T is more serious) is not THAT bad (it also depends if you’re heterozygous or homozygous) and is mainly responsible for your body breaking down folic acid - which it doesn’t do very well if you’ve got the mutation. Best thing you could do is switch from synthetic folic acid to the active form - folate, and double the dose (I take 800mcg). Also, I’d get some methylated B12 supplements (you should take all your B vitamins in their active natural form). I’ve been told I’m gonna need blood thinners when I’m pregnant, but that’s probably because I’ve got this other mutation as well. You’ll be okay! Talking to that doctor should put your mind at ease 😊

I haven’t been diagnosed with the mutation, but after my miscarriage I took precautions as if I did and switched from folic acid in my prenatals to full blown folate.

Hi Becca,
I have that mutation too and was about to post about it. There isn’t a lot of conclusive science but some doctors believe it may cause miscarriages. 
I heard they put you on aspiring and a different for for folic acid, the one that we can digest since the mutation has a hard time or cannot let your body metabolize folic acid. 
Also some people are put on blood clotting medication and have had success. I’m going to be actively pursuing this and looking for a doctor who believes in Thai mutation. I had four early miscarriages so I need some miracle.
