How do you view marriage?

So as an atheist/agnostic how do you view marriage? Before I viewed marriage as a way of expressing your love and binding your spirits. Now, I still see it as a way of expressing love but binding you together more so legally rather than mentally (spiritually). With me seeing that way I feel like you shouldn’t get married for love alone because love is blind. What do you think?

It’s a definitely a covenant between you and your spouse. I do not view it as a “contract” rather so a promise to my spouse and a commitment that no matter what happens, I won’t leave their side. We will fight through anything together and get through it. It’s sad how society has changed that and made it more of a “legal” thing rather than actual feelings behind it. :/

I only got married for cheaper insurance lol. I don’t care about marriage at all. It was never important to me and it still isn’t.

It's an earned right, so it has personal and societal value in my eyes. My partner and I are from vastly different backgrounds, hundred years ago our decision might end up lethally for both of us. It's a celebration of improvement in society.

My husband is Christian, so it was still very much a "spiritual binding" (as you put it) for him. For me it was the only way I'd get to live with him again (we had lived together for five years in college unbeknownst to his parents and the four months it took to get married after graduation were absolute torture and a huge strain on our relationship, but because we were unmarried we weren't allowed to live together 🙄). It's convenient for taxes. It's convenient for healthcare. It's a piece of paper to me, because after six years we were practically married in all but name, finances, and healthcare. Our relationship hasn't changed since being formalized.
