Could amniotic fluid test be wrong?

So I thought my water broke last night. It was like nothing I'd experienced before. It felt like I was peeing myself, but I haven't had bladder control issues at all and this definitely wasn't urine. It was enough to soak through my underwear and shorts and run down my leg. It didn't continue to leak, but a couple hours later I started getting contractions. I eventually went to labor and delivery and they tested for amniotic fluid which came back negative. Has anyone ever had the test be wrong? The test was taken about 6 hours from the time I had the "discharge" if that makes a difference. Also I'm 39 weeks 2 days, 1 cm dilated and have been having contractions for more than 12 hours, but not consistently enough for them to keep me.

Not me directly. But my niece was pregnant and around 38-39wks. She said she had been leaking fluid and had to wear panti-liners. She got checked at l&d that night and they sent her home saying it wasn't her water. 
Over night she had inconsistent contractions until she decided to go back in the morning because of how uncomfortable she was. 
They did another test that came back positive and they said they didn't wait long enough on the initial test.
Her water ended up being broken longer than 24hrs and baby passed meconium. He had some breathing issues and had to spend a few nights in NiCu. But he is a healthy almost 2yo now. 
I don't tell you this to scare you, but trust your gut. If you feel the need to call your Dr or go in and be checked again then go. That's what they are there for.

Of course tests can be wrong, but don't let it stress you out. If you're GBS negative, there's no reason you can't go days or even a week leaking amniotic fluid because it replenishes three times a day. Just drink lots of water and keep an eye out for signs of infection like fever and the baby still moving around like normal. And definitely trust your gut if you feel you need to go back to the hospital.

Always ask again! Please don’t feel discourage to ask them to test again. I would say that it cannot be inaccurate because the color of the strip changes immediately once it comes into contact with the fluid.

If your uncomfortable go in. Always . It is NEVER OKAY to be leaking for days. That's why the moment your water breaks THEY KEEP YOU.
