my blood pressure has been spiking up to around 140/90 the past few days but my labs say no abnormal protein? does that mean i just have high blood pressure and not preeclampsia

Yes, with my first baby my normal bp was 140/90. I went to my 39 week appointment and it was 160/110 and they sent me straight to the hospital and induced me and eventually I ended up with a csection. I felt fine the whole time and had no clue my bp was so high. High bp alone can still be concerning and cause problems, so make sure to monitor yourself and if there are specific triggers that raise your bp.

You can DEFINITELY have preeclampsia without protein! You need to have two bp readings of 140/90 or above, at least two hours apart plus one symptom off a list of other symptoms; one of which is protein but doesn’t have to be. 
I’ve had one pre eclampsia pregnancy, and one eclampsia pregnancy, and neither one did I have protein. It’s the “rarer” presentation, and the OLD guidelines did say you needed to have protein, but they are old and outdated and it’s been found it’s not always the case.

I’m dealing with the same issue, although mine has spiked several times and stayed a bit above that threshold lately. 
Absolutely tell your doctor, as they can test for protein or other abnormal labs in other ways. You can also discuss any other classic symptoms of preeclampsia to watch out for that may or may not show up (headache that persists despite Tylenol or that is super intense, vision problems, pain in the upper abdomen/right side of ribs, etc.). The spot checks for protein from one-time urine samples are not always able to detect it.
The high BP can be gestational hypertension, but it could alternatively be preeclampsia developing. Important to keep an eye on it since it can be unpredictable in its onset. Some doctors will have you come in more frequently to check BP and the baby to ensure the placenta is doing its job. Note your baby’s movement patterns and tell your doctor if something changes.
The good news is we are far enough along that if you have preeclampsia and the recommendation is to deliver early, most babies are big enough to handle it just fine. Preeclampsia is still very rare, to boot.
