Baby shower (and parties in general) faux pas?

I think this is extremely unusual, and borderline tacky. My husband says it's normal.

I have a friend who's having a baby shower (due around the same time) and she's made it known she expects presents, which of course I don't mind. I'm excited to get her boxes of diapers to last her the first few months. What I find absolutely tacky is that she's having it at a restaurant and expecting her guests to pay for themselves.

So not only do I have to give up my Saturday to celebrate you, I have to eat at a place you picked, with people I don't know, pay for food I may or may not like, and give you presents.

Am I crazy? Is this normal? Because if it is it sounds like the absolute perfect, stress-free way to conduct every celebration in the future.
