Where to put baby down?

So I haven't even had my baby yet and I'm already stressed thinking about this lol

When your baby is a newborn (so cannot sit or hold their heads up yet), where do you put them down when you need to get up to go get something? I have two dogs that are very sweet and loving but love to be up close and personal to everyone. So I can't just put the baby on the ground, and I'm not comfortable leaving baby on the couch unsupervised. Should I just get another bassinet for the living room or something, to keep the baby up higher our of their reach? What do you guys do?
