Teens murder conviction

Garcia❤️🌱

So I was watching a segment on tv, and it was about 4 teens (17 & 16) who decided after school they were going to burglarize someone’s home. They knocked on the back door, no one answered so they broke in. As they went upstairs they heard shots. Apparently the owner was home, heard the break In and grabbed his gun and went to chase them . The teens ran into the closest room, and the owner had declared in court he followed them in order to trap the thieves. As the kids were running from him and entering the closet to hide, one was shot and killed on the spot and another in the leg. Well they ended up being charged with their friends murder and sentenced life sentences 50+ years. Charges were because it’s technically not just a burglary but home evasion which are felonies and lead to a death. Parents think it’s unfair since none of them actually killed him while a lot of people feel it’s justified because of the laws. Should they have been charged with the murder? Was the sentence too harsh?
