I’m curious ?!

Question

Do you regret joining ? Why did you join ? What did you have to give up, majorly? 
I’m thinking of joining and I wanna know. 
If any of you regret it ?
I know service member give up so much ! I just wanna hear from y’all if it was worth it for you.

I definitely don’t regret joining. I joined for two reasons, 1 being school and 2 being in hopes to motivate my siblings. I have two brothers, one who always wanted to enlist but can’t because of a disorder. He lets this hinder him in places it shouldn’t, he could do so much but he chooses not to. I hoped enlisting would show him that if I (his baby sister) could enlist (something I never imagined or hoped to do until actually leaving for BMT) that it would motivate him to set goals for himself. 
I do miss family (I’m stationed in Japan from Texas) but being taken care of does make up for it. It’s hard sometimes when you miss big events you wish you could participate in, but it makes going home so much sweeter IMO. 
I often forget other 20 year olds aren’t getting the experiences I am (Heck, I’ve been living in japan for two years and will be in Korea for a year!) most people I know are just going to school and haven’t traveled much. I’m forever grateful for the experiences. Even if sometimes I don’t like my base or how things are run, the free time and traveling makes it worth it to me.

Going to be honest, I have no real idea how my life would have been different outside of the military. I enlisted almost 22 years ago and am currently coming up on retirement so I have to decide what to do when I grow up. That's probably what I gave up more than anything is a lot of the choices in where to live and what my job would be. I did have some say in that within bounds, but there is a bit of loss in personal freedoms that comes with taking the oath to defend those freedoms for others.
I joined initially to get some structure and discipline in my life and to complete my college education. I'm just now finishing my degree, but that's on me for not staying on top of that. I am leaving the military with a family I didnt have before and a fairly solid financial footing, but I also have injuries that will have an effect forever. In the end I have no regrets.

I 100% don’t regret joining. I joined a little later than most (22 when I joined) I was working 3 jobs just to pay bills and getting nowhere. I joined, have a steady job, and I’m doing much better in life.

I wish I went Active Duty Army and then got my degree but I do not regret this decision I made because I’m still going to get this degree and become a 1st Lieutenant! 💕
