Would it be asking for too much

My boyfriend surprised me and took me engagement ring shopping today.. he was ready to finalize the purchase today, but I didn’t see anything I was IN LOVE with. Anyway, I was fine with seeing the ring before the proposal, but physically being there and watching him buy it is making me sad. I was kind of looking forward to a proposal... nothing extravagant, just a memory we could share with our children one day. Now I’m feeling like that may not happen, since he’s doing everything with me around. Should I mention this? Or will it just make me sound ungrateful/unhappy?
