Scheduling induction?

Question

I have (luckily) no medical reason to be induced early, but I was wondering if an obgyn would schedule an induction around 39 weeks, even with baby and mother being healthy (Vaginal delivery not c-section)? ? I have always been under the impression that you can’t exactly ask for that.... I just don’t know what the normal “rules” are.. I’ve never been induced but am SO miserable I would love to be able to have my little guy a few days early and have it scheduled for preparation and peace of mind. My first son came naturally a week after my due date.

It really depends on your doctor. Either way, don’t be afraid, just ask. I’m sure he/she has been asked that question by plenty of pregnant ladies before.

I asked my doctor how far overdue she would let me go and she said “41 weeks but, that doesn’t mean you have to wait that long”. I’m assuming she was hinting that she would induce me if I wanted, which I don’t. But it is nice to know the option is there.

My doctor offered to induce me at 39 because I am miserable, but I said no. This is my second kid and I was induced with my first and I would not recommend it if you don't have a medical reason! It is so awful and I'm convinced it made recovery so much worse! Avoid it if you can. I know it is so hard to hang in there, but ultimately it's only a week or two.

I’d ask, they’d likely just ask why and I’m sure they know why but would want to hear it from you. I was lucky to have my water leaking at 39+6 so I was induced. Induction failed and ended in csection though, my opinion is that if they had let my body maybe try to go into labour naturally which it probably would have then csection could have been avoided. Now I’m on baby #2, and have to have a csection so it’ll be at 39 weeks and I’m tempted to ask if it can happen sooner, I’m so uncomfortable!!

My parents live cross country and so my doctor was perfectly fine agreeing to an induction date after 39 weeks if baby is “fully cooked” in his words. Lol

My doc said she would induce me at 39 weeks (if I make it that long 😉) because I’m worried about my husband’s work schedule. I think it just depends on what your doctor thinks is best!

My doctor told me if I’m uncomfortable enough she’ll strip my membranes and send me home to have sex at 39 weeks and that should do it for me, considering I’m already 3cm and 80% effaced at 37 weeks. That’s as close to induction as I get. I don’t think you can be medically induced with drugs without a medical reason, but your doctor might strip your membranes.

With my first, my doctor would not induce until after 40 weeks but wouldn’t let me go past 42 weeks. At my 40 week appt she let me schedule my induction the next day since she was on call or I’d have to wait until the following week.
