Does it Feel Odd For Your Children to Share a Different Last Name than You?

My son Greyson is 2 years old and although me and his father are not married, I chose to let him have the same last name as him. It didn't really bother me at the time.  We were engaged but have never lived together and now we've been through a lot more domestic violence and him drinking and things like that and now I'm not even sure if we're really together. We still talk and things like we're dating and friends too but half the time I don't know what's going on. Anyway, I'm about to have my second Baby Boy in a couple of weeks and I think I'm going to give him the same last name as his brother. It just feels odd to me that their name is different than mine. I don't really use it unless someone asks like making a doctors appointment or something. Do you think it may bother them in the future when they're older and more aware that our last names are different?

My brother and I have different dads, so different last names. My mom married another guy that is neither of our fathers, so my mom and step dad had another name altogether. It was never weird for us. It was our “normal.”

not at all. my bf has a different last name than his mom and his brother and his brother has a separate last name from both of them so summed up there is three different last names in the family with my boyfriends changed twice. everyone picks up on the situation and they typically don’t ask why. they’re your kids do whatever you want! i even have a different last name then my mom and sister.

My son has his father's last name because he is a junior and we are not married. It meant a lot to him to name him after himself for whatever reason so I let it happen. I'm pregnant again now and of course I want to have the same name as my children but I don't want them having different last names especially since they have the same father. So he or she will also have his last name and maybe one day we'll get hitched...idk. We've been together almost 6 years now.

Its not easy to change a child’s last name. Trust me. Its the last name, you’ll need a court order and both parents will have yo sign a notarized document and pay court cost. I know this because the hospital spelled my sons last name wrong on BC, we had to go threw this procedure. I only say this so you know the severity￼ of the process. I seen woman on here suggesting to change the name.  I got married young and didn’t change my name. My kids have there dads last name. I didn’t think nothing of it. Now Im remarried and my son has my husbands last name. I never gave much thought into it. If these to babies have the same dad, Me personally would just give them the same last name.  But its up to you. What is it you want.

My two boys have their fathers last name. We have an 8 year old together and a 2 year old. We were not together when our 2 year old was conceived but we did try to work it out after that. He trapped me by getting me pregnant with my two year old, long story, but I did still give them both his last name. We were together for 10 years but never married. My last name is still maiden and my two have their dads, I’m with someone else now and have been for almost 2 years, and I’m pregnant with a little boy who will have his dads last name. My older two will have a different last name than my youngest, and I will have a different last name from all of them. My feelings are to give the baby the dads last name as long as dad is in the picture for the kids. Their father and I barely get along but we are civil for the kids and it doesn’t get in the way of how he cares for them so I have no regrets on giving them his name.
