What’s allowed ?

Ok so I never got a tour of our hospital for my birth but I’m just kind of wondering how things work. In the birthing unit can anyone just walk in or do they have to be approved to come in the unit ? And do they notify you if someone shows up and you ok it or do you have a list of people that are ok to come in ?

They will usually ask while in labor,  but after baby is here,  they just assume everyone that's there is supposed to be unless you tell them otherwise. They are busy and don't have time to check with every single room about every single visitor. If there's someone you don't want,  then tell them and they won't let them in. But other than that,  anyone who shows up and knows your name can get buzzed into the maternity ward and see you.

Not at my hospital. You can’t get into L&D or the maternity ward without approval. I’m shocked that many are saying they just let anyone in. That is not at all safe.

My hospital has a security desk in L&D and you have to be buzzed in. During labor they don’t let anyone back unless approved.

At the hospital I deliver, they have the maternity wing that's "locked". And you get a code. And you can share that with those you want to see you. So when that person comes up, there's a phone by the door and I believe the guest would pick up the phone and the person on the other side would ask for the code and the guest gives the code and they unlock the door. Each family has a different code.

So at our hospital if you go upstairs to the L&D there's a phone booth right outside the elevator and you have to call in to the nurse station and they take down all your info and they go ask the person you're looking for if they know you and want to see you and if you say no, they will make up some excuse for you to leave. Now, if you are allowed in by Sally sue, they give you a colored bracelet that's JUST FOR l$d and they put your name and Sally Sue's name on  it and you have to show someone when you go out and come back in
 If someone somehow gets in without the bracelet or approval they will get the hospital police to make you leave no questions asked you just have to go

Usually if there is someone you don’t want you need to specify that to your care team do they can make sure they aren’t allowed in. However otherwise (at least at the hospital I deliver at) anyone can come in. They do have to get a visitors pass though as it is a secured area of the hospital.

Our hospital is unless you tell them people aren’t allowed in then they will let them. I have delivered at two different hospitals here and they were both the same way
