Power outages in California?

Question

Do you think the power company PG&E should be able to do this, just because they’re bankrupt due to their own faulty equipment and starting past fires? Should they be able to shut down people’s power for days at a time? Or do you think there should be another way to solve the problem? If so what?

This is the solution they have until they come up with a better one. Yeah it’s unfortunate, but what’s worse is watching my friends and family lose their homes & loved ones. Better than not being able to breath without a mask & having my car packed and ready to go in case the winds shift. The camp fire last year was one town over from me and a million times over I’d rather have the power off than watch the flames grow from my driveway again.

That’s why the government is typically involved in these companies so they can intervene. But PG&E should have been shut down 20 years ago for their mismanagement of the public’s health

i'm in ca. pg&e expanded far beyond what they're able to handle and now consumers pay the price. they should've been updating equipment and the grid but have neglected to do so for decades. hopefully they get broken up. honestly considering investing in being as independent from the grid as possible now and buying solar panels + powerwalls + wind turbines

There needs to be a better way to handle this. Even short term outages could cause so many problems for many people. My guess is that with power out, there are people that can’t work. A couple of days might not seem like a lot to some, but those living paycheck to paycheck it could be devastating. Food can spoil ii the fridge and that’s just to make a couple. My thoughts and prayers go out to those people.

No I don't think that's ok. Without power then food can spoil in the fridge which is a waste of money. It's getting cold now so we people need heat to stay warm. I don't understand how it could possibly be a good thing or even legal what they're doing. If the customers pay for power then they should get power.

It's better than more fires starting, but really, they should have gotten their shit together ages ago so this wasn't the option they were left with. This feels very similar to the gas lines exploding in southern new hampshire last year and the repairs and checks not being completed for months when it was getting cold. No recourse for the people affected and the company gets to continue operating because it's a public utility 🤦🏼‍♀️

I'm on day 3 and its really wild out here. I'm not in the city about an hour north of Sonoma, a small town (pop under 400) and its secluded, so the resources are already stretched but today they shut down the grocery store right as we pulled  up. About 10 others also had gotten there and some were banging on the windows and yelling. The gas is gone, the nearest gas station would be 45 min away and I'm sure its above 4.60 a gallon. There is so much that could be a disaster for someone, luckily we are doing fine but we have well water, wood stove for heat and cooking and we can work from home and not use gas.  I couldn't imagine if I was sick or had kids or needed electricity for a medical device, this would be awful and so scary. 
I do not believe they should be able to shut off the power for this long. There needs to be a max for how long this can happen. 3 days or more is way too long, it could be life threatening to some people and it's not okay.

I live in California and I totally agree on the decision of the power companies of PG&E and Edison to turn off power when people can get into grave danger due to fire hazards. We already have enough fires and we don’t need more because some can’t live without air conditioning.
Surely the power grid needs an upgrade, but if they’re lives at risk, you don’t leave the power on a crappy grid.
