Teaching a 7 month old "yes" and "no"?!

My MIL thinks it's okay to start teaching my 7 month old baby "yes" and "no". I'm a first time mom so I don't really know when the best time is to start teaching that but 7 months seems a bit early? What do you ladies think??

It's not too early to start teaching those words but definitely too early to expect the little one to understand and adjust behaviour.

If you say no too much they just say it back to you when then start talking and don’t do what you say. I try to find a positive way to say things. If you don’t want them to hit, for example say, “Gently.” And show them how to tough gently. It really makes no difference when you start teach things. They won’t learn them until they’re ready. Also you don’t need to teach children how to talk. Just talk to them in their every day life and they naturally learn.

I’m pretty sure my son knew what no meant because we would say it before stopping him from doing things he shouldn’t be. At 7 months, babies are already taking in a lot of information and processing. You should be talking to your baby all the time and they will naturally pick up what words (like yes and no) mean. I’m assuming you talk to them and use those words so in that case you already are teaching them... If she’s saying it like you never tell them know and she think you should be, I think it’s always a good idea to set boundaries early on. If it’s teaching them to answer yes or no questions, once again, all you can do is continually model it which you should be doubt anyway just through talking to them and others around them.

I mean, just start talking to your baby as soon as they are born. Nothing wrong with teaching them “no” or “yes”. Are you worried that “no” would be to harsh?

It’s really never to early to teach anything as long as it’s at a developmentally appropriate pace. Like reading books, explaining things at the store, talking about your surroundings, etc. I “teach” my 4.5 month old all sorts of things but she doesn’t understand it, nor do I expect her too. But it is fun to explain what mommy is cooking in the kitchen. Or how we pick out a Christmas present. 
I would be wary of the word “no” as it is used far more than the word yes. Have you read Hung by the Tongue? It’s explains that theory. Find other ways to use no like diverting a behavior.

I think you can start teaching him when you feel it’s time to. He’s just a baby still so don’t stress. Plus babies learn so quick just by watching you and your actions.

Yess you can start even from just a few months old it doesn’t hurt to say their name , yes, no , mommy, daddy or whatever :) and around this time it’s possible for them to even try to say it aswell !
