To refollow or not to refollow (read description

So i was hooking up with this guy last january and two days before he left for winter break+ a semester of college he asked me to be his gf, i said yes, we were long distance for a month, and i got too drunk at a party and hooked up w my old long time hook up, immediately told my then bf, and we broke up. Fast forward 5 months i see him at a party, tell him how sorry i am still, and he forgives me and we hook up twice that weekend that he was in town. Ever since he’s been back in town this semester we hook up once in a while and his friend said my ex is no longer mad at all and we’re cool now. My ex seems to love the hook ups but i always initiate. I asked his friend if i should refollow him on instagram before he graduates and he said yes like it was nbd. Should i refollow or no? Also why am i always initiating??
