Other Rh negative moms out there?

Please tell me your experience with finding out you were RH negative and how your ob handled it.

I found out I was Rh negative when I donated blood in high school. Early in my relationship with my now husband, I asked his blood type (he is Rh positive). Pretty much started my appointments once I knew I was pregnant with the information (with family doctor and midwives). At both, I was told if I ever find that I’m bleeding, I need to go in to the office or ER for a Rhogam shot but otherwise I’d get it at 28 weeks (shot offers protection for 12 weeks). Two appointments ago, I reminded them about the shot so they ordered extra blood work up to make sure I hadn’t already developed antibodies when I did the GD test. Got the shot at my last appointment after it came back clear, no side effects from the shot. They explained that they will test baby’s cord blood at birth to get her blood type. Shot needs to be given within 72 hours of birth for it to be effective and the lab shouldn’t take more than a day to get back. If she’s positive, I get the shot and they monitor her for jaundice while we’re in the hospital and at the 1 week checkup. If she negative, all is good.

My OB was calm and said I don't need to worry unless I saw bleeding. I got my shot of rhogam almost a week ago and it didn't hurt at all. The nurses were very informative. They will check the cord blood after baby is born. If baby is positive, then I will get another shot of rhogam. My mom, myself, and both sisters all have -A blood type and have had to get the shot.

I knew I was Rh- because of my last pregnancy. The normal labs they draw in the beginning of pregnancy show your blood type tho. I started having bleeding around 19 weeks this pregnancy. I spot for a couple hours once or twice a week. My doctor sent me to get a second opinion with a specialist and the cause of bleeding is still unknown. I was worried because with bleeding they typically say you need the shot if you haven’t already had it. I did not receive the shot until about a week ago at 28 weeks which is the normal time patients receive it. Blood is drawn before they administer the shot to ensure your body has not get created antibodies. The only time your body can create antibodies from my understanding is if my blood would come in contact with the baby. Generally if you bleed during pregnancy and it’s not from the placenta your fine. Bleeding from the cervix doesn’t generally come in contact with the baby.

My ob was calm she asked for the father blood type I got the rhogam shot at 28 weeks and if the baby has my blood type then I won’t have to get it again after delivery but if baby has different blood type I have to get it again

I’ve known I’m rh negative my whole life because I have AB- blood. Was tested twice at birth because they didn’t believe the first one. Dad is A-, Mom is B+. I got the rhogam shot at 28 weeks with my son and he was tested at birth and he is A- so neither of us needed it again. I just got the shot again last week at 28 weeks with my daughter. My husband isn’t sure what blood type he is but he thinks he is B+. So if my daughter is positive, we will both need the shot. Both hospitals were very good about giving it to me on time.

They were calm, and told me that I would be getting injections durning and maybe after birth if baby was positive blood type. Now I went into the Er for spotting before and they freaked out because I forgot to tell them I was RH negative. So they gave me the shot. I always get them in the hospital because they have to make the shot out of the blood they draw, and my ob doesn’t have a lab to do that at.

So my experience is..I went in as a new patient at 8 weeks for vaginal bleeding. They did blood and according to my records I now have, they found out I was O-. I didn’t know this. No one else in my family is negative. I wasn’t told about my blood type or the Rh negative issue until Friday at 28 weeks. Although supposedly you are to get the antibody if you have vaginal bleeding ( at 8 weeks). The nurse weighed me and walked me to the room, took my BP and then came back with a tray of needles. I asked what’s wrong and she said “oh you’re RH negative and you have to get the antibody injection today”. She then gave the antibody and left the room.
