Why do you think many MILs are so mean?

I know many of you ladies have terrific mother in laws of which I am extremely jealous, but alas this post isn’t for you. 
This post is for all the daughters in law who married a man with a toxic mother. Maybe she’s a great woman and only hates your guts and nobody else? 
Maybe she’s a nasty old bitch with a chip on her shoulder for the whole world. 
Maybe she’s jealous of your relationship with her son and feels threatened because he loves another woman that’s not her? 
I’m sure there are many more reasons why MILs misbehave, but those are the ones that seem the most likely. 
Why are mothers in laws so mean to their daughters in laws?

Because they jealous their sons found a good woman and their sons attention is on the girls and not their mothers

I've often wondered about this. My MIL was wonderful to me before her "baby boy" married me. She even encouraged him to propose, however every thing changed when we married. We all had to move in together the first year of our marriage for everyone's financial well being. It was the worst year of my Adult life. I think my mother in law just didn't want the change that came from it. She thought she'd still be the #1 Woman In his life. She didn't and doesn't want to let go. She still tries to control certain aspects of our lives, still tries to make our business hers. My husband feels sorry for his mom, my husband's step dad passed two years ago, I'm always hearing him excuse his mom behavior, oh she's just lonely. I struggle, my MIL has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer this year. I try to help out with her care, but I have to limit the time I help her. I could do more, but she won't help herself she's still smoking even though her doctor told her to stop. I don't know the answer and I struggle to love her despite of who she is.

My husband told my MIL that I'm pregnant over a month ago (this will be her first grandchild). She has yet to reach out to me. I mean is it that hard for her to send a text to her expectant DIL saying shes happy/ excited for me. Or maybe ask how I'm feeling?

Mine treats me like shit sometimes. She will go to the store and buy everybody a drink except me. Makes me feel like she dont want me around. And her response is well you(my fiance) didn't tell me she wanted something. It's fucked up how I am made to feel everyday.

I think my MIL treats me like shit because that’s the way my husbands fathers mother treated her. She is very much so a “you should experience what I experienced” kind of person, so it would make sense. It’s really fucked up, but that’s the way she thinks

My MIL is ignorant and has a fucked up idea of what being a good mom means. Once I accepted she's just dumb and it's her loss, it made things a ton easier.
