Is having one really necessary?

We aren't having one. The sound machine I registered for has an option to project shapes on the ceiling so we will use that if we feel we need something.

No. I bought one with my first child because I thought she "needed" to have one and I think my cats enjoyed it more than she did.

Nope. Especially not the cute ones. Little babies are really much more interested in black and white high contrast patterns. But I'm not getting one of those either.

I wouldn't get a regular one. I had one by Tiny Love that my daughter loved. Each individual toy would spin quick and she would smile/laugh. If your going to get one I would get that one. Try Once Upon a Child if your on a budget.

My 1st enjoyed hers...but no, it isn't necessary just cute for baby to enjoy the music and stimulation to sooth.
