How to help my son with his shoes

My son is 4 and very independent, he changes himself all the time but when it comes to his shoes, he always puts them on backwards. I’ve tried putting them right I front of his feet and showing him the difference, putting them against his foot so he sees which shoe matches which. And he just doesn’t get it. Some days by chance he might but he won’t get it right by him actually knowing which goes on which foot
