Spousal Permission for Tubal Ligation/Vasectomy
Please forgive me if this a top 50 topic in CC. Let me know if it needs to be moved or removed. I did some searching and I didn’t come across it.
Do you think women who are married need their spouse’s permission/written consent to get their tubes tied? Like to the extent of a signature on a “permission slip?” Why or why not?
Do you think men who are married need their spouse’s permission/written consent to get a vasectomy? Also to the extent of a signature on a permission slip? Why or why not?
I was thinking about this the other day. My husband and I have one child and I’m currently pregnant with our second. I tell him that I’m done after this and I either want my tubes tied or that he should get a vasectomy (because it’s less invasive, it’s an outpatient procedure, and it’s easier to reverse). He always says he wants another child, for a total of three.
Of course I would never go behind his back and have a tubal ligation without discussing it with him first, but should his written consent be required for me to have one? And mine if he were to get a vasectomy?
I did a quick google search and came across this:

I think it’s odd how women need permission (if permission is required), but men do not. I don’t have experience with this because neither of us have gone through these procedures. I will be discussing it with my OB to find out more though.
If you have any personal experience, please share. If you don’t, what are your thoughts?
EDIT: I will add-maybe some hospitals and doctors require permission from spouses to protect themselves? They certainly don’t want a lawsuit or something (I’m not sure how that would hold up in court).
