Is it true that emergency c sections are common?

Should I be worrying as much as I am about getting one? I have my hopes set on a vaginal birth, and I'm worried that at last second I'll have to get a c section like some stories I've read..(Im honestly terrified at the idea of a c section)

I'm not sure about that fact, so I'll let someone else chime in on that. As for being scared of a c-section, they aren't all that bad. Everyone has different experiences with them though, and different levels of pain tolerance. For me personally, I loved it! It was so quick and calm. I showed up at the hospital at 7am, got checked in, prepped, and wheeled back for surgery at 10am. By 10:15, I was eye to eye with the cutest little bub I have ever seen. We were wheeled back to our room before it was even 11am, and my son got to ride on my chest the whole way - most intense moments of my life! The pain wasn't bad for me at all. Stay on top of pain meds, and get moving as soon as possible. I don't know what I was expecting... I guess something on the order of the pain of 20 root canals coming from my belly. Nope! Not even equal to one root canal :) Maybe I just need a new dentist. Anyways! It wasn't bad at all, and I was out hiking through a xmas tree farm 6 days after being released from the hospital. Personally, the bill was more painful!! :P   I realize an emergency one is not like what I had, but I'm thinking you're scared of the recovery, so I just thought I'd  share that they aren't so bad at all. Unfortunately they are very common nowadays. I had one and did not want one, but in retrospect I'm glad I did for the safety of my baby.

In my opinion, I think way too many doctors rather do a quick c-section and be done with it. Plus it benefits them and other hospital staff because they recieve more money for doing a surgery versus a vaginal birth. This is my assumption about the rate and increase of c-sections in the U.S.

With that said, please try not to worry. There are plenty of women who have successful vaginal births. Good luck!

I had to have one & I wanted an all natural birth. I made in to 9 in a half centimeters with no drugs but he was just too big, he couldn't fit so I had to have him via emergency c section. C section wasn't bad at all. It was more just overwhelming & emotional, I just kept really focused waiting to hear him cry. Most beautiful sound in the world. Recovery is hard but worth it.

I had an emergency csection due to a 70% placental abruption (rare) @ 40w4d. My son was in distress. I was bleeding to death. I was at home when it happened. I was actually scheduled to be induced at 40w5d. Don't worry though. Mine was completely medically necessary. As long as you have no health issues, you should be able to deliver on your own.

I recently miscarried, but we will try again soon and we are planning a water birth at home to avoid the doctor plan :epidural which slows things down...pitocin to speed things up...emergency C when the drugs cause problems. No thanks. Put me in a tub at home and let my body do what it waa made to do. Best of luck, momma.

I am scared of that as well. Had my son naturally but most women in my area have "emergency" c-sections so I'm worried my doctor might have other plans than mine. I guess we'll see.
