Should I be swapping sides?

Question

This may be a Stupid question but I’m very new to breastfeeding and don’t know a lot. My second child was born today and she is latching quite well however she prefers one side over the other and when I try to familiarise her with the other side she gets fussy and upset. 
Should I persist and keep trying to introduce both sides or should I keep her where she’s comfortable and pump the other side??

Both sides!!! My son had a fave side, when he was in the NICU, they said if they are favouring the one, start with the other. But always offer both breasts each time.

Both sides each feeding. Start with the side she less favors. Even 5 minutes is better than nothing.

Both sides! Or else you will end up with one breast significantly larger than the other. Work with a lactation consultant to figure out different positions that can work. My son has a hard time on my right (second round breastfeeding) and I discovered this morning (at 12 days old) that he does better when side lying on that side. You can also try the football hold.

I heard a lactation consultant say “if you come to my house for dinner, I will always offer you dessert, but you don’t have to finish it or eat it at all.” So basically, always offer both sides, let baby decide if they’re full.

I don’t alternate sides each feeding! My little guy came home from the NICU with a preferred side but i decided in order for him to get more hind milk I keep on one side. So one feeding will be right and I pump the left. Next feeding will be left and I pump the right. This has helped him not have a preference anymore and he is gaining 12oz a week since coming home!

Since she was just born, she still learning how to breast-feed. I would still try both sides. She will get more milk if she breast-feeds from both and your milk production will be better. It’s normal for babies not to breast-feed too well in the beginning. My girl who was just born in October didn’t breast-feed well at all at first. Then when she got the hang of it,She did very well.

My daughter prefers left side over the right. The one nurse told me since I typically hold her in cross cradle on the left to hold her in football on the right to "trick" her into thinking it's the left and it actually works really well

Haha I feel your pain. My son had a preference and it was so difficult to get him to latch on the left side. To this day (14 months later) my husband and I still call my left side “the lesser nipple.” 🤣 
Keep alternating and your baby will get the hang of it. Great work and congrats!

Definitely swap sides so both will have equal milk production! Breastfeeding will stimulate the milk to come in more than a pump will. Your baby will get used to the other side sooner or later. I had some problems in the beginning too, but I'm 3 weeks in and me and baby both have it down now😊
